A victory is like winning a million verbal duels,", India's ODI captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni has said, summing up his team's recent victory over Australia in the tri-series championship marked by verbal attacks by some Australian players against Harbhajan Singh and others.
"We gave it back to them, and how !" he was quoted as saying in the latest edition of 'Tehelka' magazine.
Dhoni said he had refrained from giving any reaction to the Australian provocations as he knew his team could put it across the world champions.
"I believe in action more than words. I was repeatedly hounded by Indian reporters, who wanted my reaction on repeated insinuations by some top members of the Australian team. But I said nothing. The best answer is your performance", he said.
"I knew we would win and hence, refrained from reacting. I knew we would give it back to them at an appropriate time".
Asked how he felt to actually see his hero Adam Gilchrist retire during the series, Dhoni said "I felt sad, really sad. But then, I also felt happy because he would be a part of the IPL and we will have more of this legendary cricketer. He is not finished yet".
The Jharkhand wicket-keeper batsman, who played a key role in the team's historic triumph Down Under, said he missed home food and his two pet dogs during the long tour.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni is keen to acquire a graduation degree despite his demanding career and busy calendar.
Dhoni met the principal of St Xaviers College, Nicholas Tete yesterday and expressed his desire to complete B Com from the institution.
"Yes, he is keen to complete his graduation in commerce. Once Dhoni formally submits an application, the college will start the process," Tete said.
He said the college, being an autonomous body, would have to seek guidance from its chancellor and the University Grants Commission (UDC) on the mode of education to be applied for Dhoni.
"Since he has a busy schedule, there will be a problem for him to attend classes regularly. Maybe, the distant education mode could suit him.
"In this mode he has to submit assignment papers and other related things," Tete said.
Dhoni had completed class XII from a DAV School in Ranchi.
In 2006, the then Ranchi Deputy Commissioner Pradip Kumar had said that Dhoni would lead the Sarva Siksha Abhiyan to help enroll students at the primary level, but Dhoni could not turn up as the official communication never reached him.
However, now Dhoni's academic interest has made the students of the college euphoric.
"We are excited after learning that he will be among us. This will not only help his academic career but also inspire the students not to take education lightly," said Sourav Roy, third-year student of the college's mass communication department.

MUMBAI, October 21: India's chairman of selectors Dilip Vengsarkar was a pleased man after India's win in the one-off Twenty20 international against Australia.

Vengsarkar was also happy that the Indian team matched the Aussies in the ODI series and felt the final scoreline 4-2 was a lot closer than it shows. In fact, Vengsarkar felt the team had a lot to gain from the series

"We played excellent cricket against a formidable team like Australia. The Aussies play cricket at a different level, but we showed last (Saturday) night that we too can be dominant," Vengsarkar said as he reviewed the just concluded series.

The Indian team was well-placed in their chase of a huge Aussie score at Nagpur, but only failed just as the match slipped away. "Had we won in Nagpur we could have very well drawn the series," added Vengsarkar.

The series also marked a return to the side for left-arm spinner Murali Kartik who repaid the faith posed in him by the selectors. But Vengsarkar preferred not to single out a player for India during the series. "It was a complete team effort."

However, ODI and Twenty20 skipper MS Dhoni came in for praise from the chief selector.

"He did a good job during the series. He is a good thinker of the game and is a calming effect on the side," opined Vengsarkar.

Vengsarkar, a former India captain, felt beating Australia in the last two games of the series will help in the upcoming series against Pakistan as well as the rest of the season.

"It will stand us in good stead and our morale will be higher when we play Pakistan. Even when we go to Australia these wins will help because we have beaten them here. At least it will be at the back of our minds that this team
(Australia) is beatable," reckoned Vengsarkar.

While some have tried to drawn a parallel between the rampaging West Indies team touring India after the 1983 World Cup and the present Aussie team, Vengsarkar had a different view.

"Both are great sides. In 1983 West Indies really clobbered us in the One-dayers and Test matches. But this time we held our own and played extremely well against the Aussies," said Vengsarkar.
